Chapter Forty-Five

They went to bed somewhat sated after dining on a jar of Colonel Wilbur Montgomery’s Homestyle Organic Peanut Butter and Ritz Crackers, belching from the six-pack of Coca-Cola they’d split.

Exhausted from a highly emotional day, they went out hard and were sleeping peacefully while embers glowed in the fireplace. Suddenly, Vinny heard a grating noise on the roof that he dreamt was the long, gnarled fingertips of a witch’s hand, its nails calcified and green, clawing at the roofing shingles. His eyes opened begrudgingly, his expression already telling. Holy shit! His top lip curled in disgust—another night’s sleep going down the drain as the witch’s fingers drew nearer and nearer, making a beeline straight for them. It was almost on top of them when a SCREECH like the threat of a fire-breathing dragon split the night. Lisa jumped up and threw her arms around him.

“What the fuck was that?” he asked.

SCREECH! SCREECH!

“Sounds like it’s right outside the door.”

Lisa was shivering. “Shit. You don’t think it’s trying to get in, do you?”

“How the hell should I know? I don’t even know what’s out there.” He hurried to Trotter’s gun cabinet. SCREECH! Reaching in he withdrew a large Dirty Harry handgun, a .44 magnum. He checked to make sure it was loaded before throwing his leather jacket on over his T-shirt and boxers. He aimed the gun at the front door and charged out of the cabin.

He stood in front of the cabin and looked up to see the brittle, dead limbs of an old chestnut tree brushing up and back against the roof, its gnarled branches producing the scraping sound that had originally awakened him. “So that’s what I thought was the fuckin’—”

SCREECH!

Up on the branch of a tall oak tree sat a screech owl, no more than six inches tall and less than half a pound in weight. It filled its miniscule lungs and let out a SCREECH so loud, so piercing, and so frightening that Vinny pulled the trigger and emptied the .44 into the night, firing in a direction diametrically opposite the little owl. The echo of the six massive reports took moment to subside but when they did all seemed quiet. Victorious, Vinny swaggered back into the cabin.

SCREECH!
